Afdeling Chirurgie biedt buitenlandse dokters in opleiding een plek om ervaring op te doen

De afdeling Chirurgie van VieCuri werkt samen met de University Clinical Center Gdansk, een universitair ziekenhuis in Polen dat qua omvang vergelijkbaar is met het UMC in Utrecht. Joanna Halman volgt hier de opleiding tot vaatchirurg en is naar VieCuri gekomen om een maand lang te ervaren hoe vaatchirurgie hier plaatsvindt. Joanna: “Voor mijn opleiding moet ik drie keer in een ander ziekenhuis stage lopen. Ik heb gekozen voor Nederland, en specifiek voor VieCuri, omdat ik geïnteresseerd ben in het toepassen van prehabilitatie bij patiënten, vooral bij etalagebenen. In tegenstelling tot andere landen, wordt dit hier al toegepast. Klinische studies laten zien dat dit echt tot verbeteringen bij de patiënten leidt. In andere landen, ook in Polen, wordt patiënten alleen geadviseerd om meer te bewegen, maar wordt dit (nog) niet begeleid.”

Leren van verschillende werkwijzen
Joanna heeft ervaren dat elk land zijn eigen interpretaties heeft op de Europese richtlijnen op het gebied van vaatchirurgie. Ze is van mening dat door verschillende invalshoeken te bekijken en ervaringen uit te wisselen, er veel van elkaar geleerd kan worden. Joanna: “Er is vaak geen betere of slechtere methode, beide hebben hun voordelen. Het maakt echter wel dat je beide gaat overwegen en niet blijft hangen in vaste routines.”

Korte lijnen
Joanna wilde graag in een ziekenhuis meelopen waar de lijntjes kort zijn waardoor er veel contact mogelijk is tussen de artsen, andere zorgverleners én de patiënten. Dit heeft zij ervaren bij VieCuri. Joanna zou VieCuri dan ook zeker aanbevelen bij haar studiegenoten. Daarnaast heeft zij diverse operaties bijgewoond en zag bij VieCuri weinig verschil met hoe de operaties in Gdansk worden uitgevoerd, hoewel VieCuri een kleiner ziekenhuis en daardoor minder gespecialiseerd is.

Joanna heeft in haar korte tijd in Nederland veel van het land gezien. Ze merkte dat mensen overal erg behulpzaam waren en dat ze zich overal welkom voelde. Na deze succesvolle stage van Joanna overweegt VieCuri om een internationale uitwisseling te starten met Gdansk. Vaatchirurg Jan-Willem Elshof heeft Joanna begeleid: “Door specialisten in opleiding over en weer uit te wisselen, zorgen we ervoor dat meerdere mensen kunnen leren van de verschillen in werkwijzen en technieken in andere landen en ziekenhuizen. Ingegeven door het enthousiasme van Joanna, overwegen we om hier een structurele uitwisseling tussen Polen en Nederland van te maken. De ervaring die je hiermee opdoet, is iets wat je meeneemt in de rest van je carrière”.

VieCuri offers junior doctors from abroad the opportunity to experience vascular surgery

VieCuri's Department of Surgery works with the University Clinical Center Gdansk, a university hospital in Poland comparable in size to the UMC in Utrecht. Joanna Halman is training as a vascular surgeon and has come to VieCuri for a month to experience how vascular surgery takes place here. Joanna: "For my training, I have to do three internships in another hospital. I chose the Netherlands, and specifically VieCuri, because I am interested in applying prehabilitation to patients, especially with chronical limb ischemia. Unlike other countries, prehabilitation is already applied here. Clinical studies show that this really leads to improvements for patients. In other countries, including Poland, patients are only advised to exercise more, but this is not (yet) supervised."

Learning from different practices

Joanna concluded that there are different ways of performing the same procedure with similar results. She believes that by looking at different perspectives and exchanging experiences, much can be learned from each other. Joanna: "There is often no better or worse method, both have their advantages. However, it does make you consider both and you don’t get stuck in fixed routines."

Short lines

Joanna was eager to work in a hospital where the lines of communication are short, allowing a lot of contact between the doctors, other healthcare providers and the patients. This is what she experienced at VieCuri. Joanna would certainly recommend VieCuri to her fellow students. She also attended several operations and saw little difference at VieCuri compared to how operations are performed in Gdansk, although VieCuri is a smaller hospital and therefore less specialized.

Joanna saw a lot of the country in her short time in the Netherlands. She noticed that people everywhere were very helpful and she felt welcome everywhere. After this successful internship of Joanna, VieCuri is considering starting an international exchange with Gdansk. Vascular surgeon Jan-Willem Elshof supervised Joanna: "By exchanging specialists in training back and forth, we ensure that several people can learn from the differences in practices and techniques in other countries and hospitals. Inspired by Joanna's enthusiasm, we are considering making this a structural exchange between Poland and the Netherlands. The experience you gain from this is something you take with you into the rest of your career."
